Federal Housing Director Calls for Investigation into Jerome Powell

William Plute, the Director of Federal Housing Financial Institutions, has requested a Congressional investigation into Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell. He’s also calling for Powell’s removal from office.

This request comes amidst ongoing criticism from President Donald Trump, who has been vocal in his disapproval of Powell’s refusal to lower interest rates, even as the economy approaches the boundaries set by Powell for such a move. Interestingly, Powell has stated he wouldn’t resign if the president were to ask.

In his remarks, Plute cited a report about a $2.5 billion renovation project for the Federal Reserve’s headquarters in Washington, D.C., as a basis for the investigation.

“I am asking Congress to look into his political bias and misleading statements made during his Senate testimony,” Plute said. He further accused Powell of dishonesty regarding the renovation project, dubbing it a scandal and criticizing the supposed embellishments he mentioned before Congress.

“All the sensationalist claims circulated by the media aren’t part of the current plan,” Powell responded. He dismissed the notion of a lavish VIP dining room or various upscale features like new marble decor or rooftop gardens.

Powell has suggested that while lowering interest rates may be in future considerations, the unpredictable nature of the president’s tariff policies requires careful analysis. “All U.S. inflation forecasts have spiked significantly due to tariffs. We haven’t overreacted, rather we’ve chosen to be methodical. It’s important to wait, gather more information, and see the real effects. They’re not evident yet,” Powell explained.

Critics argue that the Federal Reserve was meant to operate independently to avoid political influence on monetary policy. On the flip side, supporters of the president assert that Powell and other Fed leaders are already swayed by political considerations.

The Federal Reserve comprises 12 regional banks, each managed by its own president, focused on setting monetary policy. Its dual mission is to manage interest rates to control inflation while avoiding substantial unemployment.

Jerome Powell was appointed by Trump during his first term.
