Houthis Defy Warnings, Fire Anti-Ship Cruise Missile Toward U.S. Warship

U.S. Central Command announced Sunday that the Houthis fired an anti-ship cruise missile at the USS. Laboona guided missile destroyer operating in the southern Red Sea at around 4:45 p.m. local time.

According to Centcom, a US fighter jet shot down a missile near Yemen's Hodeidah coast.

No injuries or damage were reported.

The attack came after President Joe Biden ordered strikes against the Houthis on January 11 in the Red Sea to “degrade” the group's ability to continue attacking U.S. forces and commercial shipping around the world.

The United States, together with the United Kingdom, fired more than 150 rounds of ammunition at 16 different locations, including storage and launch sites for radar systems, air defense systems, one-way attack drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles.

In response to the airstrikes, Mr. “It sends a clear message that we will not tolerate putting our people at risk.”

He also warned that “we will not hesitate to order further measures to protect our people and the freedom of international commerce as necessary.”

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin also said the strikes sent a “clear message” to the Houthis that they would “incur further costs” if they did not stop attacking ships in the Red Sea.

This action is aimed at disrupting and reducing the Houthis' ability to endanger seafarers and threaten global trade in one of the world's most important waterways. Today's coalition action sends a clear message to the Houthis that they must stop their illegal attacks or face further costs.

The Houthis vowed retaliation after the airstrike.

The Houthis, who are funded by Iran, have carried out more than 25 attacks on ships crossing the Red Sea.

The terrorist group claims the attack was in retaliation for an Israeli attack on Hamas, which killed more than 1,200 people in southern Israel.
