How a strained relationship may impact LeBron James’ future with the Lakers

LeBron’s Future with the Lakers in Question

When Luka Doncic joined the Lakers, many thought it would be a turning point for LeBron James, particularly with the prospect of competing for titles in Los Angeles as he progresses in his career. However, the reality might not be that straightforward.

LeBron’s relationship with the team’s management seems a bit strained. “LeBron could walk away at any time,” commented Athletic’s Jovan Buha during a podcast. He mentioned that both he and Sam Amick had pointed out that the atmosphere between LeBron and the front office has occasionally felt, well, less than amicable over the years.

Considering LeBron’s hefty $52 million contract for the 2025-26 season, it seems unlikely he’d test free agency at 40. But after the Lakers’ early playoff exit against the Timberwolves, he reached out to the front office, likely due to frustration with the roster decisions—especially since Anthony Davis had been vocal about wanting changes before Doncic’s trade.

Asked about the small lineup the Lakers had to operate with, James replied, “No comments.” He implied that Davis’s requests contributed to the team’s current situation, leaving many to wonder if there’s more under the surface.

LeBron is one of only two NBA players with non-trade clauses, meaning any movement has to be mutually agreed upon. The Lakers are reportedly keen on retaining LeBron and adjusting the team around him, alongside Doncic, as they eye the 2025 season.

Buha expressed confidence in LeBron staying with the Lakers next year, but exactly how that will unfold is still up in the air. Additionally, there are whispers that James might lose Austin Reeves, one of his trusted teammates, as the team looks to bolster its roster with more size and a robust defense.
