How Adam Fox's previous contract has turned into a great deal for the NHL

Five years ago, Adam Fox signed an extension with the Rangers that significantly changed the landscape for defensemen exiting their entry-level contracts. His seven-year, $66.5 million agreement, averaging $9.5 million annually, came shortly after he won the Norris Trophy in the 2020-21 season—an achievement he has continued to uphold with his performance, consistently reaching point-per-game stats.

However, as the market for defensemen has evolved, with numerous high-value contracts being signed, Fox’s seemingly advantageous contract has started to look more like a steal. Just this summer, Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar secured a groundbreaking $163.2 million extension, making history as the first NHL player to exceed $20 million in average annual value. Quinn Hughes, who will be an unrestricted free agent after this season, is expected to set a new benchmark as well, whether he stays with the Wild or moves to another team.

Under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, Fox will be eligible for an extension following the end of the 2027-28 season, which coincides with the last year of his current contract. At that time, he will be just 30 years old, turning 31 when the deal concludes. This situation puts the Rangers in a position to reassess Fox’s worth against the backdrop of escalating salary caps and lucrative contracts that are likely to redefine his future financial expectations.

This week is a fitting moment to reflect on Fox’s contract, especially with the anniversary of his signing and the milestone of his 500th career game looming against the Kings. He’s off to an impressive start this season, collecting 16 assists in the first 13 games—leading all defensemen and trailing only Connor McDavid for the NHL lead. His current point total makes him 12th overall in the league and tops among Rangers players. If this pace continues, Fox could easily surpass his career-high of 74 points from the 2021-22 season, the very year of his extension.
