Giants Coach Takes Different Approach with Abdul Carter
Brian Daboll attempted to guide Abdul Carter onto a more positive track during his tenure as the Giants’ head coach.
Before being let go last month, Daboll reportedly fined Carter multiple times for tardiness and failing to fulfill team obligations, as noted by Sports Illustrated. This ongoing issue had been a source of frustration.
In a shift of strategy, interim head coach Mike Kafka chose to bench Carter at the start of a game against the Packers due to the linebacker missing a walk-through; he was occupied with a red light therapy session.
Then, in a subsequent matchup against the Patriots, Carter sat out the entire first quarter after once again neglecting team responsibilities. It’s talked about how Kafka, while claiming authority over this disciplinary decision, had the general manager, Joe Schoen, closely involved in addressing Carter’s issues.
“I fully support Kafka’s decisions regarding player discipline,” Schoen expressed. However, he downplayed the concerns surrounding Carter, citing the young player’s age as a factor in his recent actions.
“These young athletes are under immense scrutiny in New York City. Mistakes happen,” Schoen added. “Our job is to nurture them—not just on the field, but in life. We’re committed to that.”
After the game against the Patriots, Dexter Lawrence mentioned that Carter needs to “grow,” a sentiment that resonated with former Giants player and current analyst Carl Banks.
Carter responded to these critiques positively, stating, “I respect the opinions of those who say such things—like Lawrence. It makes me reflect on my actions. I need to ask myself, ‘What can I do to improve?’ And ultimately, I want to show them that I can earn my respect and grow into the player I ought to be.”
