How Chinese Intelligence Accessed LA Mayor Karen Bass' Team

An investigation has revealed that Adam Ma, a key official in Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass’s administration, has connections to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). He is recognized as a prominent figure in Chinatown and is the son of a Democrat donor who has praised the CCP in the past.

Adam Ma holds several roles in Bass’s office, including liaising for Asian Americans and serving as a director within various committees. His father, Ma Shurong, has contributed significant amounts to Bass’s campaign, notably praising the CCP for its role in strengthening China. Shurong is also linked to multiple Chinese government agencies, specifically the United Front Work Department (UFWD).

In an address back in July 2021, Shurong stated, “Without the CCP, there would be no strong China today,” during a celebration of the party’s centenary. This has raised concerns among experts. Gordon Chan, a Chinese affairs authority, suggested that Bass might be inadvertently aligning with strategies that could undermine U.S. interests.

Attempts to reach Bass, Adam Ma, and his father for comments have not received a response.

Bass gained attention for her strong opposition against the Trump administration’s deportation policies. Following riots against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Los Angeles in June, she publicly demanded an end to these operations.

Relations with the United Front

Ma Shurong—who also goes by the name Derek Ma—has established connections with senior CCP officials through various UFWD channels. These operations combine political engagement with intelligence activities, enabling the CCP to influence policy in other countries and access foreign technology.

Ma Shurong is recognized as an overseas committee member of the All-China Returned Chinese Federation, operating under the UFWD. His ongoing collaborations with several regional branches highlight a commitment to strengthening ties within the Chinese community abroad.

During the pandemic, Ma Shurong continued to engage with ACFROC leaders and made pledges to enhance partnerships with the organization.

The Impact of CCP Support

He and his family were major supporters of Bass during her 2022 campaign, participating in fundraising activities. Notably, a fundraiser was hosted for her at a local restaurant, showcasing the financial backing Ma’s family provided. After Bass’s election victory, her inauguration was attended by Ma Shurong and other family members, reflecting their support.

Adam Ma stepped into his role in Bass’s administration shortly after her inauguration. He has participated in high-profile events representing the mayor, such as the Chinese New Year Parade in early 2023, along with other community-focused gatherings.

By May 2023, he began serving as a liaison for Asian Americans and the LGBTQIA+ community. His continued involvement in various initiatives demonstrates active engagement within the mayor’s office.

Financial records indicate that the city paid Adam Ma over $129,000 in 2024. Concerns about the influence of foreign connections in local governance remain prevalent, with calls for transparency regarding contributions from his family to Bass’s campaign.
