How Iranians Are Maintaining Connections During an Internet Shutdown

The majority of Iran’s nearly 90 million people are currently cut off from global communication due to an extensive internet blackout imposed by the government. This unprecedented shutdown was enacted in response to widespread anti-government protests that started in December, which have escalated into violent confrontations. Many businesses in Tehran have closed due to rampant inflation.

Starlink, a satellite internet provider, has emerged as one of the few means for some Iranians to connect with the outside world. Reportedly offered free in the country, Starlink helps activists and citizens share information in real time, despite significant efforts by the government to disrupt their connections. The use of this technology is officially banned, and users are taking considerable risks to maintain their access. Compounding the crisis, power outages persist, and measures to disable traffic signals have increased. This situation underscores both the potential of technology to bypass censorship and the steep costs that individuals face in their struggle for communication amidst oppression.

Does God hear the voice of the silent?

While technology has certainly enhanced communication opportunities for many, a significant number of people still live in isolation, their voices stifled by governmental and societal restrictions. It truly takes immense courage to confront such dangers to advocate for truth and justice in oppressive regimes. There are countless individuals risking their lives to connect with others, defying the Iranian government’s censorship efforts. As believers, how can we best support those whose expressions are currently muted?

It’s crucial to remember that our pleas are always acknowledged and that every story shared, even in obscurity, is seen by a higher power. Justice may not manifest in our lifetime, but a promise of a final judgment and renewal exists. God takes note of every pain concealed and extends understanding of our tribulations.

Consider Hagar, who voiced her distress while facing abuse and abandonment. God encountered her in her loneliness in the desert, supplying the strength she needed to continue amid her trials. She returned with renewed confidence, knowing she was acknowledged by God. Similarly, we should trust in divine intervention, even when we feel overlooked.

How can we pray for those at risk?

The glaring silence surrounding the suffering of an entire nation compels us to reach out in prayer. We should ask God to grant safety, resilience, and spiritual fortitude to those navigating these dark times. Seek divine protection for those who dare to speak out against threats and oppression. Pray for creativity and wisdom among individuals trapped in this repressive system.

“He looks forward to the success of the righteous, and is a shield to those who walk innocently; for he keeps the paths of the righteous, and protects the paths of the faithful.”

Let us keep the Iranian people, who know God, in our prayers for their safety and success. Even when we falter, we hope to experience God’s peace.

How can prayer open doors that tyranny closes?

As distant witnesses, we must fervently plead for the removal of barriers and the restoration of communication. We call upon the God of miracles to amplify truth and illuminate the dark corners of Iran and beyond.

“Therefore I am in trouble as a doer of evil, even unto bondage; God’s word is not binding.”

Let the truth of God’s word and the voices of the faithful remain unhindered by malevolence. Hope can ignite a recovery even in a subdued populace, as light inevitably triumphs over darkness. Prayer, indeed, is a powerful force that can unify believers worldwide, irrespective of borders or censorship.

“And pray for us, too. May God open the door for our message, and may we proclaim the mystery of Christ in chains. Pray that we may proclaim it as clearly as I should.”

Let us pray for doors to open, enabling the message of hope to reach Iranians, allowing truth and light to penetrate the darkness. When we unite in prayer, we participate in the broader work of salvation.

Prayer for those suffering in silence

Let’s humbly offer our prayers for Iran today.

Father,
Thank You for your presence in the lives of everyone on this planet. You created each of us with a purpose. We appreciate Your listening ear and how You address the prayers of the faithful. We request Your intervention for those silenced under the oppressive Iranian regime. Uncover new bold pathways for Iranians to share their stories freely. Empower them with your message of hope even as darkness tightens its grip. Bring justice to those wrongfully persecuted and assure the Iranian population that they are not alone. We seek Your wisdom, comfort, and grace as they navigate these challenges. Transform the hearts of their leaders, bringing them closer to You, and dismantle the chains of oppression. Encourage influential figures in Iran to advocate for lifting these restrictions and instill peace among those weighed down by fear. By Your grace, create opportunities where there appear to be none.
Amen.
