How Rubio Ready Congress for US Efforts Against Iran

U.S. Military Action Against Iran

In recent days, Secretary of State Marco Rubio had been alerting Congress about impending military action against Iran, as reported by a State Department source.

Early Saturday morning, at 2:57 a.m., President Donald Trump declared in a video message that the U.S. had initiated an attack on Iran, aiming to address what he described as a significant threat from the Iranian administration. A State Department official noted that Rubio had a lengthy discussion with the “Gang of Eight,” a group of Congressional leaders, on Tuesday before the attack.

The “Gang of Eight” consists of top Republican and Democratic leaders in Congress who are privy to sensitive information from the executive branch. According to the official, one member was unreachable, but Rubio managed to connect with seven others. Additionally, military commissions were notified by the Department of the Army promptly after the strike commenced.

As for Rubio, he was reported to be at Mar-a-Lago alongside the president at the time.

In response to the strike, some members of the Gang of Eight issued statements. Democratic Rep. Jim Himes from Connecticut, who is the ranking member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, criticized the administration, saying it had entered into a “war of choices with no strategic end goal.” He remarked that military actions in the region often yield unfavorable outcomes for the U.S. and warned that a conflict with Iran could easily escalate unpredictably.

Himes reiterated his concerns during his briefing with the group, emphasizing the unpredictability of military actions in the region.

Senator Mark Warner, vice chairman of the Senate Select Committee, shared that the president is looking for clear objectives and strategies that would prevent escalation and assure the safety of American citizens.

On a more positive note, Chairman Mike Johnson expressed his support for the strike in a message, indicating that Iran would now face significant consequences for its actions. He mentioned Trump’s efforts to counter Iran’s nuclear ambitions and called for peaceful resolutions.

In his video address, Trump asserted that Iran had repeatedly dismissed chances to abandon its nuclear program and emphasized that the U.S. policy—especially under his administration—is that Iran must never possess nuclear weapons. He elaborated on the military intentions, stating they would aim to dismantle Iran’s missile capabilities and ensure that Iranian proxy forces could no longer destabilize the region.

Trump elaborated further in a follow-up interview, stating that his primary concern was the freedom of the Iranian people, suggesting that they seize the opportunity to take control of their government post-attack.

Days prior to this event, an Army Department spokesperson had briefed on operational strategies concerning Iran, underscoring the military’s readiness and the need for the Iranian regime to acknowledge the seriousness of U.S. intentions.

A State Department official confirmed the formation of a special committee aimed at assisting Americans in the Middle East and facilitating diplomatic efforts in the region.
