Sydney Collins’ Remarkable Comeback
Sydney Collins, a defender for Bay FC, has had quite the start to 2023.
Initially selected eighth overall by North Carolina Courage in January’s NWSL Draft, her impressive college career at the University of California, Berkeley, set the stage. The following month, she received her first call-up to the Canadian women’s national team and made her debut against France in April.
With six international appearances (four of which were starts) and ten for Courage (two starts) under her belt, the young defender seemed poised for a breakout season in 2024, both at the club and national levels. Her inclusion in a Canadian prep camp felt like a dream come true.
However, in February 2024, she suffered a severe injury to her right leg. Miraculously, she recovered just in time for the 2024 Paris Games in July, only to face another setback with a broken left leg a week before the group stage commenced.
Instead of celebrating what should have been an incredible milestone, everything felt like it had slipped away.
“Anyone who has dealt with long-term injuries knows about the patience it requires,” Collins reflected. “It’s a lesson I’ve truly held onto.”
Each step of her recovery has presented unique challenges. Returning to the field will demand every ounce of her mental strength.
Collins noted, “It took a village for me over the last few years. From my supportive family to my sports psychologist and the resources from various clubs I’ve played for, I needed help, not just with health, but throughout the rehabilitation process.”
After enduring ongoing physical and mental challenges for more than a year, Collins finally returned to the pitch on July 25th for a match against Liga MX Femenil’s Cibas de Guadalajara.
“I honestly wasn’t sure if I could get back on the field,” Collins expressed. “But I’m really thrilled to be playing again, not just practicing. After everything, my perspective has definitely shifted.”
Throughout her recovery, Collins learned many lessons, though none overshadowed the importance of resilience and determination.
In August, she returned to her roots in the Bay Area. Collins joined Bay FC in 2025 after they traded $60,000 in allocation money for her. Shortly after, she signed a significant extension through 2027.
While she was eager to play again, this time it felt especially meaningful.
“It’s hard to put into words,” Collins shared. “Being back here among friends and family, this new chapter has helped me rediscover my joy for the game and move past my injuries.”
Her return is crucial for Bay FC. Almost immediately after her signing, head coach Albertin Montoya named her as the starting right center-back, where she has since made five appearances, four of them consecutive.
“Being back on the field after such a long time was incredibly special,” Collins commented. “During tough times in rehabilitation, I held onto this moment as the light at the end of the tunnel. I’m committed to getting healthy and playing for Bay FC. I truly love being part of this team.”
Collins aims for the dream of competing in the 2024 Olympics and dreams of showcasing her talents on the international stage. For now, she’s thriving with her club, playing in front of her friends, family, and supporters.
Sydney Collins’ journey has been anything but conventional. At every turn, she confronted obstacles but constantly rose to the occasion. After navigating numerous trials and tribulations, she has found her place, ready to embrace the sport she loves once more.
