American Eagle Outfitters’ Bold Ad Campaign
The CEO of American Eagle Outfitters has faced scrutiny on social media due to a provocative advertising campaign featuring actress Sydney Sweeney. Despite claims that the campaign is promoting problematic stereotypes, the brand has chosen to maintain its approach.
According to reports from The Wall Street Journal, the campaign has seen considerable success in the weeks since its launch.
The company’s stock prices experienced a noticeable uptick along with an increase in clothing sales.
“You can’t escape fear,” Jay Schottenstein, the teenage retailer’s CEO, stated in an interview. “We’re standing behind what we did.”
Sweeney, known for her roles in popular series like “Euphoria” and “The White Lotus,” was featured in advertisements showcasing American Eagle’s denim line.
The campaign’s tagline read, “Sydney Sweeney has some amazing jeans.”
In one of the videos, Sweeney remarked, “The genes are passed on from parents to offspring, often determining characteristics such as hair color, personality, and even eye color. Jeans are blue.”
Some critics have suggested that the campaign’s messaging includes troubling double meanings. However, Schottenstein has firmly rejected any notion that American Eagle is endorsing themes of “eugenics” or racial supremacy. He referenced his stepmother’s experiences growing up in Nazi Germany as part of his rationale.
Schottenstein expressed awareness of sensitive terminology during the conversation with the Journal.
Interestingly, former President Donald Trump has praised the campaign, particularly noting that Sweeney is a registered Republican.
“Sidney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the ‘hottest’ ads,” he commented.
As the leader of the company, Schottenstein aims to “put jeans on every torso in the United States.”
He indicated that a small team has been assigned to monitor social media reactions regarding the ads, and the company has hired outside help to gauge the advertising campaign’s effectiveness.
Following the initial momentum of the Sweeney campaign, American Eagle also launched a new marketing initiative featuring Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce.
Susan Cantor, CEO of branding firm Sterling Brands, commented that American Eagle’s strategy of not backing down has helped them avoid significant backlash and maintain customer loyalty.
“By sticking to their guns, they’ve kept their customers,” she noted.
