USMNT Celebrates Independence Day Amid World Cup Excitement

SEATTLE — Members of the U.S. national soccer team gathered on a downtown rooftop with friends and family on Saturday night to watch fireworks launched from a barge on Lake Union.

With barbecue, laughter, and a moment to feel thankful, they embraced America’s 250th birthday, all while in the middle of the World Cup. It felt like, well, a nice way to celebrate a big occasion.

But soon enough, they would return to their training.

This Monday, the team faces Belgium in a Round of 16 matchup, possibly the biggest challenge for this generation of players. Yet, what stands out is not just their on-field achievements, but what they represent beyond the pitch.

This Independence Day occurs during a time when many Americans seem divided. Interestingly, the national team reflects this diversity. The squad consists of 26 players from various backgrounds, each bringing unique life experiences, cultures, and beliefs to the table.

And still, they wear the same jersey.

“It’s doubly special because it’s during the World Cup, and triple special because it’s here in the United States,” said team captain Tim Ream. He added, “We all come from different places, but this is a true representation of what America is. America is a melting pot of people, personalities, and characters. This perfectly embodies who we are.”

Liam reminisced about how celebrating the Fourth of July felt different while playing for Fulham in England’s Premier League.

“A lot of people don’t actually know why we celebrate the 4th, which is funny to me because it’s a significant part of our history,” he joked. “For me, it’s about family, fireworks, and celebrating freedom.”

On this night, they kept those traditions alive.

But come Monday, there won’t be fireworks lighting up the sky in the usual way. Instead, they’ll light up Seattle Stadium as teams with unique stories pursue the shared dream of reaching the quarterfinals for only the second time ever.
