USMNT focused on Belgium in World Cup Round of 16 matchup

USMNT on the Brink of a Major Victory

SEATTLE — It’s tricky to pinpoint exactly what the U.S. national team hasn’t achieved, leading to a focus on “signature wins,” as if their three victories in this World Cup weren’t enough. Maybe it’s more accurate to say the USMNT hasn’t won a World Cup match as the underdog since 2002.

But, you know, if you really think about it, whether the U.S. will be seen as the underdog against Belgium on Monday might depend on how the odds shake out. It’s all a bit fuzzy, isn’t it?

Either way, this Round of 16 clash could serve as a groundbreaking win for the U.S. against a European giant, especially with a prime-time audience eagerly tuning in as they aim for a spot in the quarterfinals.

Just recently, the U.S. beat Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32, drawing in record viewership. It seems like the World Cup is finally back as the soundtrack of summer after a long five years. Another win, sure, but what lies ahead? It’s uncertain.

Sergiño Dest emphasized the importance of the upcoming match, stating, “It will mean a lot and I already feel that faith is great in this country. If we do that, it will become even greater.” He acknowledges that Belgium is a formidable opponent but believes in their own capabilities. “We think we have a chance to win because we are a great team at the moment.”

Some could even argue that the U.S. has performed better at this World Cup than Belgium, who stumbled at the start with two painful draws before getting back on track against New Zealand.

However, the glitzy roster of the Red Devils, featuring notable players like Jeremy Doku, Kevin De Bruyne, and Leandro Trossard, likely overshadows that of the USMNT. A victory against them would indeed signal that American soccer is here to stay, making a statement that they can compete with the best.

Tyler Adams shared his perspective, saying, “I think moving forward, it doesn’t matter whether it’s a signing or not. I don’t really care. The key is taking this as far as we can and moving forward. I think we have the chance to do that, and we’ve got to back ourselves no matter who we face.”

Cristian Roldan is continuing his rehab for a quadriceps strain, but the other 25 players joined in on the full training session.

Tim Ream took a moment to thank World Cup volunteer Vera Gonzalez Howard with a cake, a nice touch. Plus, the team had plans to enjoy a rooftop bar in downtown Seattle to watch a fireworks show Saturday night. Sounds like they’re making the most of it!
