House Republicans passed a budget resolution through the committee on Thursday, regaining their lead in the race for a settlement.
Republicans were also able to sign a deal Seven times There are more spending cuts than the original proposal, and they have a House Freedom Caucus to be grateful for. The budget calls for $1.5 trillion in spending cuts, $4.5 trillion in tax cuts, $4.5 trillion in debt limits, and $300 billion in defence and border security.
All of these are great successes for the GOP, but it was not all smooth sailing.
“From the beginning of this process, we have ensured participation from all members of the conference, reflecting our collective commitment to enacting not only part of this, but a full presidential agenda. I tried to make it clear what I was doing.”
After a weekend retreat at Mar-a-Lago and a five-hour meeting at the White House, GOP leadership had yet to issue a budget proposal earlier this week. At that point, the Senate had already put in place its own resolution to avoid the House and move forward with negotiations.
However, on Monday afternoon, Blaze News first reported that House Freedom Caucus had removed its own resolution ahead of the Republican leader.
“Given the current delay in the House of Representatives in moving a comprehensive settlement bill, moving smaller target bills makes the most sense to bring victory to Americans,” said HFC Chairman Andy Harris said in a statement. “I am proud to introduce today's emergency border control solutions to set up a settlement process within the home.”
Although the resolution of HFCs was not progressing, it put the necessary pressure on them. Within 48 hours, speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) announced his leadership budget proposal on Wednesday, teeing it for markup the following morning.
House Republican leaders in a statement following the passage of the budget I made it clear That all factions of the GOP were considered during the negotiation process.
“The budget resolution has passed the committee and House Republicans are now clearing key hurdles to providing key priorities in President Trump's first American agenda,” the statement reads. “From the beginning of this process, we have ensured participation from all members of the conference, reflecting our collective commitment to enacting not only part of this, but a full presidential agenda. I tried to make it clear what I was doing.”
“This is the start of the process and will ultimately remain focused on lasers on sending the bill to President Trump's desk. The government is doing a better job for all Americans.”
