Changes Ahead for the Raiders After Coach Firing
Las Vegas is bracing for a shift following the dismissal of head coach Pete Carroll on Monday. A key question hovering over the team’s future is whether standout defensive end Maxx Crosby will be part of it.
With the Raiders wrapping up the season with a 3-14 record, general manager John Spytek faced inquiries from the media about Crosby’s status. Was he considered “untradeable” or simply “untouchable”? This comes after a season riddled with challenges, including Crosby’s absence for the final two games due to a mid-season knee injury.
Spytek expressed admiration for Crosby, noting, “I have a lot of respect for Max and how much he loves to play the game. I’ve spent considerable time with him in recent weeks, and it’s clear he hates the idea of not being on the field.” I guess that’s a common trait among top athletes—wanting to play at all costs.
Executives highlighted Crosby as “representing what it means to be a Raider,” and emphasized that he continues to embody that identity.
Drafted in the fourth round from Eastern Michigan back in 2019, Crosby has been a reliable presence amidst frequent coaching changes.
However, just two days before Carroll’s firing, reports indicated that there could be willingness from Vegas to trade their star pass rusher if tensions remain high. It’s a situation that’s probably causing some unease among fans.
Despite earlier tensions, Crosby made an appearance at Allegiant Stadium for the Raiders’ final game against the Chiefs, which they won 14-12. That’s interesting—he’s still showing up for the team, even after everything.
Now, with the Raiders looking for their fourth head coach since 2022, the search will be guided by Spytek and minority owner Tom Brady. The new head coach will almost certainly have a significant say in Crosby’s future, whether he stays in Las Vegas or seeks new opportunities elsewhere.
By the way, Crosby recently signed a substantial three-year, $106.5 million contract extension with the Raiders before the 2025 season. That should add an interesting dynamic to any discussions about his role moving forward.
