Editor's note: We are facing an unprecedented moment in American history. Our government and multinational technology monopolies have made it clear that our people are targets of the vast surveillance state they have built. The deep state seeks to imprison those who share meme, blaze journalist, and even leading presidential candidates. It's time for us to take back control of our privacy and digital communications. This guide gives you the tools to do just that. This is an excerpt from a larger guide.
pay for email
Don't use Gmail or other free email services
Avoid free services whenever possible. I know this sounds strange. But you pay the plumber and electrician. You must pay for the email. We have become accustomed to receiving free digital services. But they aren't actually free. The cost is time (see George Gilder's Life After Google), security, privacy, and invasive data collection. As the saying goes in the digital age, free service means you're the product, not the customer.
Why pay? When you pay for a service, you enter into a type of contract. You are in a business relationship. It is the exchange of one value (money) for another value (service). Also, when you pay for a service, your provider doesn't have to sell your data on the backend to make money. To be clear, while paying for a service is essential, this does not guarantee privacy or eliminate data mining, so finding an email service that is transparent about privacy is essential. For those who don't know this yet, let me explain. Never use your work email for personal, non-work email. Your email belongs to your company, not you. The company has access to it, so it's not private and they can discontinue it if you no longer work there.
Setting up a new email takes only a short amount of time, but letting your contacts know your new address and archiving the hundreds or thousands of emails you want to keep can be difficult. Don't let that become an obstacle. Please take your time and hold on to your old email address until the transfer is complete. However, get your paid email now and start using it as your primary email going forward. Some email services focus on privacy. What I recommend is: proton mail.
Proton is based in Switzerland. It was easy to set up and I use the paid version for myself, my wife, and our older children. Proton also offers backend email services for business or personal domains, which I also use.
Proton Mail uses PGP encryption Provides PGP keys for sending between Proton users and outside of Proton Mail. PGP stands for Pretty Good Privacy. here is a good article How it works and a little bit about its history. Simply put, PGP uses a combination of private and public keys to encrypt and decrypt messages, ensuring that only the recipient can view the contents of the email. You can also use PGP without Proton Mail, but it can get quite technical.
In addition to encrypting messages between users, the text of emails is also encrypted on Proton Mail's servers. This means that even individuals with physical control of your server cannot read the contents of your inbox. However, the subject line is: not encrypted.
Proton Mail provides another layer of security by storing Proton Mail. swiss server, which has some of the strongest privacy laws in the world. This makes the company less susceptible to data requests by states. You can try Proton Mail for free to see if you like it, but get the paid version.
One caveat: Google has a paid service called G Suite for business that I and many other people use. It can be used as a backend for business emails and websites. You may need to keep Google for some reason. Your school or business may be using the Google Platform, so there's no way to avoid it. In that case, we recommend using it for work purposes only and using another service if possible. I have a paid Google account, but I occasionally need to use it to access Google docs someone has sent me, or to join Google meetings. But I don't email about it. If you must use Google, get a paid Google account and use it as little as possible. Google has value as a world-class engineer. But it comes at a price. Ostensibly data is stolen. cooperate with the Chinese Communist Party governmentand increasingly shut down people with unfashionable opinions.
