Earlier this week, ahead of the Republican National Convention officially getting underway in Milwaukee, former President Donald Trump appeared on Truth Social to announce his selection of Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance as his running mate.
Vance, 39, is a relative newcomer to US politics, but was better known as an author and writer before entering politics. In 2016, Vance published a memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and a Culture in Crisis,” which used his own family history to explain the struggles of rural America.
Raised by grandparents who escaped poverty and tried to build a middle-class life for their family, Vance went on to serve in the Marines and graduate from Ohio State University and Yale Law School, but as the book documents, his family was unable to escape the cycle of abuse, alcoholism, poverty, and trauma that pervaded working-class middle America.
Shortly after the book was published in 2016, The Washington Post’s Kyle Smith wrote, “Hillbilly Elegy is about people, not politics, but an eye-opening field guide to an unruly and incomprehensible group of people, many of whom are born and raised Democrats.”
Since Vance was announced as the Republican vice presidential nominee in the next election, “Hillbilly Elegy” has skyrocketed up Amazon’s book rankings, hitting No. 1 in paperback and No. 2 in hardcover, and selling more than 100,000 copies on Amazon alone in the past month.
