After a split in four consecutive games against the Blue Jays, the New York Yankees are set to kick off a holiday weekend series facing the top team in Major League Baseball, the Tampa Bay Rays.
The matchup marks the much-anticipated return of Yankees starting pitcher Gerrit Cole, who will take the mound for the first time in 569 days. His last appearance was at Yankee Stadium in Game 5 of the 2024 World Series.
Cole had Tommy John surgery in March 2025 and went through a lengthy recovery process that included six minor league rehab games. In his last rehab start, he threw 86 pitches, and he’ll likely aim for a similar count tonight.
“It’s been a long road, and I think he’s done a good job with the rehab process,” manager Aaron Boone commented before the game. “He seems to be making good progress. We’ve taken our time, not rushing him at all. Because of that, he’s in a great position to perform well. Still, it’s been a long time, so there’ll be a few things to work through at this level. Nonetheless, we’re really excited to have someone of Gerrit’s caliber back on the team.”
Rays vs Yankees Start Time
