Richard Hanania recently posted a wonderful and candid essay. The opportunity cost of having childrenHe sympathized with this aversion to traveling with small children, quoting one of the world’s leading statesmen, Otto von Bismarck, who wrote:
As it draws nearer, it seems like a ticket to a psychiatric hospital or to the senate for life. I imagine myself on the platform at Genting with my children, in the carriages where they are mercilessly satisfying their needs, stinking and the society around them pinching its nose. Johanna is too embarrassed to breastfeed her baby, who is white and screaming. Fighting the crowds, the inn, waiting an hour for a horse at Stettin and Angermünde with screaming children, packing up, how to get from Krächlendorf to Kürz? If I have to spend the night in Stettin, it will be awful. I experienced it last year with Marie and her screaming figure… I feel like a person who has been badly wronged. Next year I will have to travel with three cradles, three nannies, three nappies and bedding. I wake up at 6am with a mild anger and can’t sleep at night. For I am haunted by the spectacle of every trip, up to the picnic on the dunes at Strpmünde, which my fancy paints in inky colours, and I would be very unhappy if this, instead of being paid a per diem, but travelling with an infant, should bring ruin to my once flourishing fortunes.
Ah, what a shame. Unfortunately, the facts are just as brutal as Bismarck described them, and as with so many things concerning children, there is really no way to avoid the cruelty. Through Despite everything, hold your chin up high.
Peace — at least the kind of peace you enjoyed when you were single — is one of the things that becomes a parent and is lost, and no amount of fantasy traditionalist wife videos posted to Instagram is going to change that.
My expectations were low, and they were met with confidence. Clementine was screaming at the top of her lungs the entire time she went through security. Luckily, I had the foresight to prepare for the worst. Or, as I like to say, “the blessing of forethought.”
Before we get into the nitty gritty details, I would encourage you to be patient with your child and with yourself – it takes time to get used to it.
My family has adapted to the sleep schedule and things are getting better. I think once we get used to the seasickness we’ll have fun. Become familiar In a new place, kids just learn Become familiar Civilized humanity. It will take some time.
Below are some of the items that were really useful: One thing to note here is the lack of an iPad, however we relied on the screens provided and our three year old watched three movies.
Wonderfold Wagon
I wish I could make a meme out of sponsorship here. Wonderfold Wagon all day long.
Out of necessity, Americans have been some of the greatest innovators in the field of child transportation, and the California-designed and manufactured Wonderfold lives up to that expectation.
The wagon is heavy, but it could carry the kids and it could carry most of our luggage at the airport. We checked one bag per person and brought carry-on luggage and personal bags. The wagon carried our carry-on luggage and the kids comfortably. At the airport, you can check your luggage at the gate. If your flight is particularly busy, you can also check your carry-on luggage for free, so be sure to ask about this and keep your essentials in your personal bags if that’s the case.
Since we’ve been here, the wagon has been great for keeping the kids contained – it’s so big and has a flat bottom so you can nap in it – it doubles as a cot for the baby.
I have the W4 Luxe model. It comes with a variety of accessories, including removable seat belts, cup holders, trays, canopies, and more, some of which are sold separately. This wagon cover I stopped in to check and found the stroller completely undamaged (though later in the day I saw two families with broken strollers).
You check your wagon at the gate and if you have a layover (we had one in Munich) you can request to pick it up again at each stop.
If we were rational people who spaced our kids out in a more reasonable way, this might not be necessary, but since none of our kids have any self-governance yet, this mobile prison is just perfect for us.
Annie’s Homemade Snacks
Snacks are a time-honored way to soothe a toddler. My requirements are relatively healthy and not messy, the latter being especially important within the confines of a typical airplane seat. As always, my go-to is: Annie’s HomemadeIt was founded in 1989 by Connecticut farmer and entrepreneur Annie Withey.
I purchased the Cheddar Bunnies, Bunny Grahams, Fruit Leathers and Fruit Snacks variety packs, which were extremely effective at curbing panic attacks on a variety of occasions and were small enough to fit in my Surprise Backpack (see section 3).
Surprise Backpack
Novelty also helps combat restlessness, so I packed each child a backpack with a new toy to use on the plane. These included:
This has worked out really well! The Bluey camera has proven to be an especially good investment. My mother in law recently bought her a camera, and my shadowy oldest daughter is super excited to learn photography in her own way. Plus, when it’s all over, I can’t wait to see life through her eyes in my camera roll.
First aid kit
I was worried about finding over-the-counter Zyrtec overseas because my baby is allergic, and I didn’t want to pour liquid medications while my baby was crawling all over me in a cramped airplane seat, so I found disposable, pre-measured vials of a variety of medications. Diphenhydramine Not only does it help relieve allergies (inducing drowsiness, etc.) Acetaminophen Fever or Guaifenesin Helps with coughs and stuffy noses. DrKids is a subsidiary of Calm Company, headquartered in Sarasota, Florida.
I grabbed some band-aids and antibiotic ointment along with the rest of George’s eczema kit, and I’m glad I did, because within three minutes of the trip George hit his eyebrow on the stroller and cut his skin. Welly I love bandaids, they’re cute and most importantly, they’re effective.
Lollipop
Lollipops help ease the pressure changes. 10/10. And these It has no artificial taste and is very delicious.
I also give an honorable mention to Europe because the lack of AC there felt like hell. 100% cotton clothes, Portable Fanand Cooling Wipes.
I’ll be publishing guides each week on what I’ve learned along the way, because I’m learning a lot, and most of the time it’s the hard way.
