How to turn on the iPhone’s new thief-blocking security feature — before hackers ruin your life

As cell phone theft becomes more sophisticated and common, Apple has released a new iPhone update that gives users a fighting chance to protect their devices.

The tech giant has announced Stolen Device Protection, which launches a barrier that can prevent theft or stop access to already stolen phones that have been taken miles away.

Essentially, this new security feature (part of the iOS 17.3 update) works similarly to your car’s valet key by removing actions that could lead to sensitive information.

Instead of entering a numeric passcode, an enabled iPhone also uses biometric protections like Touch ID and Face ID for apps associated with passwords and credit card information.

Waiting an hour to change your Apple ID password and second attempts with Touch ID and Face ID are also part of your protection.

“If your iPhone is stolen, Security Delay is designed to prevent the thief from performing critical actions, so you can mark your device as lost and ensure your Apple account is safe. ” I wrote about new featuresThis only works if the phone is in a suspicious area.

“If your iPhone is in a familiar location, these additional steps are not necessary and you can use your device passcode as usual.”

Apple says familiar locations include your workplace, home, and other places where you use your iPhone frequently.
