Huckabee Proposes a Palestinian State Outside of Israel's Sovereign Borders

US Stance on Palestinian Statehood Shifts

The United States has revised its position regarding support for a Palestinian state in the areas of Israel referred to as “Jews and Samaria,” known commonly as the West Bank. This declaration was made by Mike Huckabee, the US ambassador to Israel.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Huckabee stated that the vision for a Palestinian state is unlikely to develop without significant cultural changes, which he believes may not occur “in our lifetimes.” When asked directly whether a Palestinian state remains a goal of US policy, he responded, “I don’t think so.”

Huckabee challenged the notion that a Palestinian state needs to exist within territories controlled by Israel. He questioned, “Does it need to be in Judea and Samaria?”—a name that resonates with many Israelis and evangelical Christians alike.

The ambassador, who has long supported Israel’s claims over the area, proposed that Palestinian entities might instead be established in areas relinquished by other Muslim-majority nations.

Recent events have intensified discussions on this topic. On October 7, 2023, Hamas, which has governed the Gaza Strip since 2007, launched a violent attack against Israel, resulting in significant casualties and hostages taken into Gaza. Huckabee attributed ongoing conflict to Hamas, emphasizing that it would persist until all hostages are released.

He also conveyed support for humanitarian efforts aimed at Gaza, while stressing the need to prevent Hamas from gaining further strength. He highlighted a joint US-Israel initiative designed to deliver food and supplies without empowering groups tied to Iran.

As for Iran, Huckabee expressed confidence that the nation would not achieve nuclear weapon capability under current policies, echoing earlier stances from the Trump administration regarding nuclear enrichment.

His remarks indicate a substantial pivot from decades of US foreign policy that previously advocated for a two-state solution based on pre-1967 borders. Upcoming discussions in New York are expected to focus on Palestinian governance and potential pathways to resolve the ongoing conflict.

Huckabee has previously criticized international calls for increased pressure on Israel in relation to aiding Gaza, suggesting that focus should instead be placed on Hamas, advocating for a formal agreement that would ensure humanitarian aid reaches those in need.

These statements underscore the viewpoint that humanitarian difficulties in Gaza are tied closely to Hamas’s control, emphasizing that pressing Israel without addressing Hamas could inadvertently encourage further extremist activity.
