Ongoing Evacuations Amid Israel-Iran Tensions
The conflict between Israel and Iran’s Islamic Republic continues, prompting U.S. Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, to indicate that measures are in place for Americans wishing to evacuate. Huckabee has urged American citizens who want to leave Israel to sign up on a designated travel website, mentioning ongoing efforts to secure military, commercial, and charter flights for their evacuation.
In a recent update from the U.S. Embassy in Israel, issued on June 19th, U.S. government personnel and their families have been advised to stay sheltered. The message reassures that the embassy will keep U.S. citizens informed about any new departure options that arise. Those needing assistance to leave should fill out a specific form to receive timely updates and support from the State Department.
So far, around 1,500 Jewish Americans have been evacuated from Israel, linking back to various initiatives, including one funded by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who sponsored a rescue flight to Tampa.
The recent guidelines clarify that while the government may assist Americans leaving Israel, travelers will later be expected to repay any financial support, although they won’t need to cover costs upfront. Assistance will likely involve travel to neighboring safe countries, rather than direct flights to the U.S. Once in these countries, travelers will be responsible for their onward journeys, but consular help will be available for navigating the process.
Furthermore, if U.S. assistance is provided, travelers will need to sign a promissory note to repay the government. Although the exact repayment amounts will be communicated before departure, there’s also a notable policy that pets will not be allowed to accompany evacuees.
Another security alert had previously indicated that the State Department is actively preparing for potential evacuations and will inform U.S. citizens of any relevant updates regarding departure options.
Amidst these developments, former President Donald Trump has expressed the possibility of U.S. military intervention to aid Israel against Iran’s nuclear ambitions, emphasizing that America should ensure Iran does not acquire nuclear weapons.
