Hugh Hewitt: Always Remember 10/7, the day Israel experienced its version of Pearl Harbor

This day marks two years since the tragic attack in Israel following the Gaza invasion by Hamas and other groups. It’s essential to remember the brutality of that day, the victims, and the horrifying actions of the attackers.

On that morning, approximately 6,000 militants entered Israel, which included around 3,800 from Hamas and roughly 2,200 from other groups. To put that into perspective, it resembles the deployment of two American brigades, similar in scale to forces used by the U.S. in Grenada back in 1983.

Since that day, terrorists from Gaza have resulted in the deaths of over 1,100 Israeli citizens and many foreign nationals, along with injuring another 5,000. The situation was compounded by the kidnapping of 250 people. Out of those, 146 have been freed or rescued, while 83 are confirmed dead at the hands of Hamas and its affiliates. Currently, 20 live hostages and the bodies of 30 deceased individuals remain in custody.

To grasp the scale of the trauma for most Israelis and those who sympathize globally, it helps to understand: Israel’s nearly 10 million residents compared to the U.S. population of 340 million means a similar attack in the U.S. would have cost over 40,000 American lives, injuring 170,000 and trapping 8,500. These figures are crucial when discussing Israel’s two years of conflict—much like remembering the nearly 2,500 American casualties during Japan’s attack on December 7, 1941, which preceded a significant retaliation.

In this ongoing conflict, Israeli Defense Forces have lost at least 913 personnel since the start of the war with Hamas. To put that into some context, it’s comparable to the number of American military personnel lost in the Korean War. Comparably, the U.S. has seen approximately 33,700 deaths in the Korean War and 47,400 in Vietnam. If we consider the attacks of October 7, it’s evident that civilian casualties on that scale would have profound repercussions.

As Israel responds to the conflict, these numbers reveal a precarious situation where the loss of life is alarming. As the war continues, it’s noted that Israel’s military actions have resulted in a loss of life that nearly matches the American troop losses in Korea, significantly overshadowing the losses from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Under pressure from external forces, Israel faces numerous attacks from various fronts, adding to the complexities of an already tense situation. Two years into this “Seven Front War,” the landscape is continually shifting. Those who disregard the extent of Israel’s struggle may not appreciate the true impact of the conflict and its history.

The response from Israel has been deeply calculated, aimed at minimizing harm even amidst ongoing hostilities. Observers note that there hasn’t been a military force in history that has exhibited such restraint during a time of war. Reports indicate that Israel has taken significant measures to limit civilian casualties, including advanced warnings before strikes and creating safe passages for displaced civilians.

Moreover, Gaza has received unprecedented levels of humanitarian aid, providing critical support during conflict. Israel has facilitated the entry of over 1.8 million tons of aid, coordinated medical treatments, and ensured food and water access for civilians. This is a noteworthy contrast to historical warfare operations, showing a commitment to addressing humanitarian needs.

Hamas’s surprise attack showcased a long-term strategy for survival, looking to exploit vulnerabilities within Israel’s military response. In many ways, this situation has highlighted the relentless threat posed by those who oppose Israel’s very existence. The events of October 7 should serve as a wake-up call, underscoring the reality of the threats Israel faces from radical elements.

As discussions about peace evolve, awareness of the harsh realities of such conflicts is crucial. Those advocating for peace must remember the significant human costs and the continued need for vigilance against extremist ideologies. The ongoing moral and ethical implications of war highlight that Israel’s struggles represent broader challenges faced by pluralistic societies around the world.

The legacy of October 7 must not be forgotten. It serves as a reminder of the depths of humanity’s darker side, akin to history’s starkest atrocities. Acknowledging the past is integral to understanding the present—and the future.
