Actor Hugh Laurie quickly addressed recent accusations regarding his stance on men participating in women’s sports.

His famous character from the series House was known for his biting sarcasm, yet Laurie seemed quite serious about this contentious topic. Unfortunately, his initial comments caused confusion among readers who felt the need to defend him.

The discussion began when Laurie shared some statistics about “Brogas” in professional basketball.

He noted, “99.9% of the world is effectively ‘female’,” adding, “If you’re an American male between the ages of 20 and 40 and at least 7 feet tall, there’s a 17% chance you’re already in the NBA.”

His comments drew a wave of responses from users on X, many interpreting Laurie’s words as supporting gender-neutral sports categories, an argument that scientist Neil deGrasse Tyson has also discussed in recent years.

Author Graham Linehan weighed in, stating, “You don’t have to be a member of Parliament to see that this is unfair and wrong. Or maybe you do think so.”

Laurie was quick to deny those interpretations.

“First of all, stop it,” he responded on X. “Secondly, no, I don’t believe men should compete with women. I thought I made that clear. If you were paying attention.”

But the back-and-forth continued.

Linehan questioned Laurie’s apparent hostility if he actually agreed with the sentiment, suggesting he should stop trying to align himself with Sophie Cunningham, who advocates for fair sports.

Laurie stated, “Yes, I support Sophie Cunningham, and sometimes I support you too,” prompting Linehan’s continued remarks.

Regarding the tensions, Laurie simply remarked, “You started it.” He pointedly commented, “From ‘coward’ to ‘shithole’ is the exchange rate around here.”

Nonetheless, not everyone interpreted Laurie’s statements in the same way. Linehan, at 67, has addressed many accusations with surprising grace.

Clarification of Intent

“That was just an observation about that particular sport, not necessarily my opinion,” Laurie explained to a reader. “It was merely an observation, that’s it. Go on,” he responded to another critique.

During an exchange with a woman who recounted past interactions regarding his shows, Laurie mentioned his point was illustrated by “my vodka bottle” and highlighted basketball’s unique aspect that made it stand out among sports.

“I find that amazing,” he stated, adding, “It’s great that others may not share that view.”
