Humanoid Robot Detained in Macau
In a bizarre turn of events, a police “arrest” involved a humanoid robot in China. This incident took place last week in Macau, where a 70-year-old woman was taken to the hospital after being startled by the 4ft 4in robot.
Witnesses report that a video captured the moment the woman, visibly frightened, yelled at the robot. It seems she shouted something along the lines of, “You’re making my heart race!” in Cantonese. Apparently, she felt caught off guard when the robot approached her, as she had been focused on her phone while walking.
In a twist that seems straight out of a sci-fi movie, the video shows the robot, known as the Unitree G1, raising its arms while being scolded. Shortly afterward, two police officers escorted the robot away from the street. Interestingly, there was no physical interaction between the woman and the robot, but she did undergo a checkup at the hospital and was released.
The robot was reportedly owned by an educational center and was engaged in “propaganda activities” in the area. Its operator, a 50-year-old man, stated he was testing the robot to improve its functions. Authorities cautioned him to be more mindful of how it interacted with pedestrians to avoid scaring them.
This unusual event has garnered significant attention, with many sharing humorous takes online. One person quipped that perhaps robots now need legal representation. Another joked about the robot’s freedom, saying, “You’re going to jail, sweetheart.” At least it seems the incident has sparked some light-hearted commentary!
