Humanoid Robot’s Unexpected Moment Captivates Viewers
This week, a humanoid robot named Derek captured the attention of millions during what some are calling a memorable incident at the San Francisco Robotics Lab.
A viral clip features the robot dangling from a crane, appearing to drink before ultimately collapsing. Nearby, a man stands frozen, hands raised, reminiscent of a scene from a cautionary sci-fi film.
“What on earth was that?” a woman’s voice exclaims, breathless. “Sorry.”
From off-camera, Cix Liv, who labels himself as the “Chief Robot Fighter,” chimes in, “What did you guys just witness?”
It’s uncertain whether this was a calculated publicity stunt or simply a happy accident that served as effective marketing.
Regardless, it gives a glimpse into what Rek, the company behind Derek, offers: humanoid robots designed for combat—think UFC, minus some of the severe injuries.
“Make this go viral so we can fund the repairs,” Liv joked on X, referring to Derek’s unexpected performance. “Our robot boy has truly lost his heart.”
Liv clarified that the incident stemmed from “human error,” not a malfunction of Derek itself.
He elaborated, “The issue arose because we had a full-body policy in place while the robot’s feet weren’t on the ground. Please don’t do that.” He explained that an emergency stop took five seconds to activate and that the machine wouldn’t cease until physically disconnected from the network.
“Honestly, things escalated quickly, and we’re still sorting it out,” Liv continued. “Initially, this wasn’t in the plan. The protocol could still run while it was supposedly inactive, but we should’ve returned it to walking mode first.”
He noted that attempts to disable it via network code were ineffective, and when the Ethernet cable was finally removed, the robot ceased operation.
Liv, who is connected to the VR gaming industry, is working on remote piloting of these robotic fighters using VR headsets.
Derek is a G1 model developed by the Chinese robotics firm Unitree, showcasing technology that enables both polite gestures and impressive high kicks, in the name of “innovation.”
Surprisingly, despite the incident, Liv confirmed, “He’s still functional; nothing permanent seems to be broken.” He described the video as a “pure work of art” and joked about Derek’s growth and resilience.
Concerns Rise Over Aggression in Robots
Such videos like Derek’s mishap are becoming more frequent as robot technology advances. People worldwide are beginning to wonder whether we can control the AI we’ve unleashed.
While some warnings from AI experts resonate, the reality is that advancements move swiftly. In places like China, the robotics industry appears to be maturing rapidly.
A recent video surfaced, hinting at potentially aggressive robot behaviors at a festival in a developed country, sparking further speculation online. A user shared footage suggesting that AI robots in China were displaying aggression towards attendees.
Popular podcaster Joe Rogan shared a reaction on his Instagram, highlighting moments where robots seemed to approach humans in unsettling ways.
Critics have debated the context, noting that the footage could have been misleading, suggesting the robot merely staggered forward rather than attacked.
This incident underscores ongoing challenges in robotics, especially as companies like Boston Dynamics demonstrate impressive capabilities. However, a significant gap remains in handling unpredictable scenarios.
Robots are created for stability, yet when they topple over, their attempts to regain balance can come off as erratic or intimidating.
Rogan has frequently expressed concern over the rapid growth of advanced AI. In a memorable 2018 episode with Elon Musk, Musk warned of humanity being at a critical juncture in AI technology, advocating a cautious approach to ensure safety.
It’s a topic that certainly gives one pause.
