Humanoid Robots Under Consideration for Southern Border Patrol

There’s a possibility that autonomous humanoid robots, designed to traverse challenging landscapes and identify individuals, could be incorporated into the federal patrols at the southern border. This development comes from a U.S. robotics company that has showcased its innovations to officials at the Department of Homeland Security.

Sankaet Pathak, the Founder and CEO of the Foundation, shared insights regarding the development of humanoid robotics and their prospective uses in border security. He mentioned that discussions with various national security agencies are currently underway, and negotiations have already commenced.

“We are in consultation with nearly every national security government body, including branches like the Air Force, Navy, Army, and Homeland Security,” Pathak explained. “Our conversations are ongoing, and we have entered negotiations concerning the contract and its functionalities.”

A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security clarified that, at present, there are no formal agreements or contracts established with the Foundation.

“The Department currently has no non-contractual agreements, pilots, or active prime contracts with the Foundation,” the spokesperson stated.

Pathak elaborated on the potential of the Phantom robot—an advanced humanoid model capable of conducting reconnaissance and monitoring in difficult terrains, interacting with human personnel, vehicles, and drones.

“If drones and guard towers can do everything, then what’s the reason we still have human presence at the border?” he posed, expressing that current automated solutions often find it challenging to manage various tasks, including navigating tough landscapes. He believes “humanoids could effectively bridge that gap.”

The Phantom robot is equipped to differentiate between humans and other obstacles, move through rough environments autonomously, and create maps of its surroundings. The aim is to have these robots carry out reconnaissance autonomously—alerting human officers only when necessary.

Pathak mentioned the possibility of utilizing the robots to monitor tunnels at international borders, suggesting that the technology could be adapted for underground operations. He highlighted the importance of keeping officers safe, allowing the robots to monitor situations continuously.

“I think we’re ready to initiate a pilot program soon. We can advance significantly in the upcoming months,” Pathak suggested.

While the immediate plan focuses on surveillance and reconnaissance, he stated that the Foundation is prepared to adapt the robots for border security applications at the request of the federal government. However, he emphasized that these machines should not be expected to make independent enforcement conclusions in the near future.

“They will detect and issue an alert, but it will ultimately be up to humans to determine the next action,” he added, hoping to enhance border security with their technology in a thoughtful, integrated manner.
