Hunter Schafer Celebrates Recent Surgery
Transgender actor Hunter Schafer, who stars in Amazon MGM Studios’ upcoming sci-fi series Blade Runner 2099, is expressing his joy after undergoing “bottom” genital surgery, stating that he is thrilled with the results.
At 27, Schafer is promoting his $160 million mini-series and shared that he began his male-to-female transition during his teenage years. In an interview with Elle, he discussed the so-called “gender affirming” surgery he underwent recently.
“I just had bottom surgery in December, which was amazing, and I love it so much,” the Euphoria star mentioned. He described the experience as “badass” and elaborated on how he had long embraced his gender-expansive identity. He noted that there was something intriguing about working with his previous body.
Following the surgery, Hunter emphasized the importance of taking things slow for proper healing, revealing that he limited himself to just 150 steps a day, which felt quite restrictive.
Last year, Schafer ventured into political commentary when he faced an unexpected issue with his U.S. passport, which incorrectly listed him as male. This change occurred after President Trump’s administration revised the gender marker rules set by Joe Biden. He had never altered his birth certificate, and it seemed that passport officials had checked his details against his birth records, leading to the unexpected outcome.
Hunter expressed concern for other transgender individuals who might encounter similar struggles. “It doesn’t really change anything about me or my transness, but it does make life a bit harder,” he remarked, reflecting on the broader implications for the trans community. He followed with a strong critique of the administration’s policies.
Additionally, Schafer insists on identifying simply as an “actress,” rather than a “transsexual actress,” emphasizing his desire to be recognized for his talent without qualifiers. “I’ve worked incredibly hard to reach this point, enduring tough times throughout my transition. Now, I just want to be a girl and move forward,” he stated.
Success has indeed arrived for him. Recently, Amazon’s Prime Video released set photos from the action miniseries Blade Runner 2099, in which he appears. Schafer is set to portray a character named Cora, described as a human pretending to be a replicant, a role that complicates her sense of humanity.
