As MLB sorts through Monday’s bizarre ejection of Aaron Boone, it’s become clear that Hunter Wendelstedt will be disciplined in a more subtle way.
MLB spoke with Boone and Wendelstedt, who threw five pitches to the Yankees’ manager in the Bronx and ended up losing to the Athletics.
Wendelstedt had warned Boone that if he said anything else, he would be ejected.
Boone remained silent, but a fan behind the dugout apparently yelled at the umpire, and Wendelstedt threw Boone out of bounds.
The league feels the matter could have been handled differently without an ejection, and the quick and clearly missed hook contributed to MLB’s overall reputation for Wendelstedt. will probably join.
As SNY first reported Wednesday, the league analyzes each referee and uses that analysis to determine postseason and All-Star Game assignments.
Additional charges apply for such events and games.
Obviously, there’s still a chance Wendelstedt can overcome one bad performance, but he dug himself a hole early on.
Meanwhile, Boone said he spoke with Mike Hill, MLB’s senior vice president of field operations, and was told he would not be fined.
