Hurricane Hunters looking into potential tropical disturbance near Texas coast

The Hurricane Hunter team is currently examining tropical disturbances that have reached the Gulf Coast this week, with Texas potentially facing significant rainfall from the system.

Late Wednesday, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) identified a disturbance labeled 98L. This term refers to areas being closely observed for their development potential.

The NHC reports that there is a medium likelihood of development for this system as it approaches Texas or Mexico this weekend.

Based in Mississippi, the Hurricane Hunter set off on Thursday to investigate 98L. These missions are vital for forecasting tropical weather because the gathered data can enhance computer model predictions.

“We’re flying along the Mexican coast and will spread moisture over southern Texas and the south-central region tomorrow (Friday),” wrote Fox weather hurricane expert Brian Norlos in his blog. “Even if it turns into a tropical depression, the effects on land should be fairly similar.”

Invest 98L is predicted to bring heavy rainfall and possibly fissures to the area, especially along the southern Texas coastline.

On Wednesday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott ordered the activation of state resources in anticipation of the incoming tropical disturbances.

“As a Texas orthosis for heavy rain and winds approaching the Gulf Coast and southern Texas, I have mobilized emergency response resources to assist local officials in keeping Texans safe,” Abbott stated.

“This tropical system has the potential to create hazardous travel conditions and may lead to flash floods. Texans are advised to take precautions for the impending weather, check road conditions before traveling, and develop emergency plans to ensure their safety and that of their families.”

Although the system may not develop into a fully-formed tropical event, it highlights the need for coastal residents to be prepared.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs until November 30th, with the period from August to October being the most active, peaking around September 10th.
