Hurricane Melissa’s Impact on the Caribbean

Earlier this week, Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica, leading to a tragic loss of at least 25 lives in Haiti. The storm unleashed heavy rain that caused the La Digue River to overflow in Petit Goave, a coastal town in Haiti, flooding numerous homes.

Jean-Bertrand Sobrem, the mayor of Petit-Goave, expressed feelings of being overwhelmed by the disaster and urged the government to assist the victims.

In Jamaica, about 25,000 individuals were evacuated, and although at least one person has died, around 77% of the island is currently without electricity. Reports indicate that the situation is quite severe.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness shared a video showcasing the damage in St. James, where residents faced significant flooding and destruction. He reflected on the resilient spirit of the Jamaican people, emphasizing their ability to endure hardships.

Hurricane Melissa made landfall in eastern Cuba as a Category 3 storm, inflicting extensive damage and leading to injuries for around 140,000 individuals amid rising river levels. After affecting Cuba, the hurricane is expected to continue moving towards the Bahamas and Bermuda, potentially reaching the latter as a Category 1 or 2 storm.

Meanwhile, humanitarian efforts are underway. Franklin Graham from Samaritan’s Purse announced that their team deployed 38,000 pounds of relief supplies to Jamaica. He described the ground situation as heartbreaking, with entire towns devastated by flooding, downed power lines, and blocked roads. Over 25,000 people are now in emergency shelters across Jamaica.

The news highlights the profound impacts of Hurricane Melissa on both Jamaica and Haiti, reminding us of the daunting challenges faced in the wake of such natural disasters.
