An IRS agent, accused of murdering his wife while allegedly plotting to be with their child’s au pair, broke down as jurors watched police body camera footage showing the moment he learned of his wife’s death.
Brendan Banfield was visibly emotional, with tears in his eyes, during his trial for the murders of his spouse, Christine Banfield, and a man named Joseph Ryan. He insists he didn’t shoot Ryan or stab Christine in the neck, claiming he intended to disguise her death as a home invasion in order to start fresh with his Brazilian nanny, Juliana Pérez Magalhães.
Officer Zachary Beckner of the Fairfax County Police, called by the defense, was one of the initial responders to the scene of the killings that occurred on February 24, 2023, in a suburban area near Washington, D.C.
In the body camera video, a doctor informs Banfield and the officer that “your wife is dead” and describes the significant blood loss she suffered.
The doctor then explains, “I can tell you what happened when she got here, but since you were there, it looks like there was a lot of blood loss.”
Banfield interrupts, saying, “I was trying to put pressure on him,” referencing his wife’s injuries.
The doctor acknowledges the severity, saying, “Yes, and the neck is not compressible, so it’s not really possible to stop all the blood loss,” while Banfield reacts emotionally.
In the video, he is heard sobbing as doctors try to comfort him, assuring him that everything possible was done to save his wife. “You did a great thing. You know, you did everything you could. It’s not a salvageable injury,” the doctor reassures him.
Magalhães testified last week that Banfield and Ryan allegedly created a fake profile for Christine on a sexual fetish site in an attempt to frame Ryan for her murder.
