Husband criticized for asking wife to prepare 'fancy' meals

Is It 1955 or 2025?

A woman took to the r/AmIOverreacting forum, expressing her frustrations about her husband’s unrealistic expectations when it comes to cooking. She described herself as the main cook in their relationship—a role she actually enjoys—but noted that her husband has been demanding elaborate meals even late at night.

She mentioned specific dishes like gnocchi, pie, and meat wraps. While she’s capable of making these, working all day leaves her exhausted, and cooking at odd hours just adds to her fatigue. When she finally said “I do,” she expected support beyond being a short-order cook, especially after a long shift.

However, her husband was taken aback by her refusal to keep the kitchen busy all night. He argued that he was used to having his mother cook for him and feels justified in expecting the same from her. That sparked a disagreement, and she felt that he has become quite distant since.

More than 600 Reddit users rallied behind her in the comments. One asked rhetorically why he couldn’t whip up his own intricate late-night meals if he was so keen on them.

Another commenter humorously pointed out the absurdity of her situation, suggesting that one’s rest should take precedence over late-night cravings.

More criticisms followed, with some saying that if their partner made similar demands, they’d be sent back to their own parents for such requests.

This behavior wasn’t unique, though. Many younger women today are thinking twice about relationships with partners who display such entitlement.

In a related situation, a millennial mother shared her challenges of managing kids while working from home. Her husband expected her to handle everything, including taking care of the children while she was in the middle of preparing dinner. When he expressed frustration over her not assisting immediately, it seemed he overlooked how much she had been juggling all day.

Admittedly, it’s pretty clear that these dynamics often result in more tension than harmony. Balancing demands at home can prove to be quite tricky, especially when expectations seem so out of touch with reality.
