Canadian Woman Detained After Alleged Incident with Teen
The husband of a Canadian woman, arrested for reportedly slapping a teenager who supports Trump while at the Jersey Shore over the Fourth of July weekend, is dismissing the situation as trivial and attributing blame to “internet conservatives” for his wife’s detention by ICE.
Caitlin Tracy, 33, was apprehended by immigration officers on July 3 following the incident and is currently being held at Delaney Hall Immigration Detention Center in Newark. Authorities reported that she overstayed her visa after entering the U.S. on a passport issued in 2024.
Her husband, Matthew Geroni, who expressed extreme sentiments about President Trump in the past, insists that his wife is the real victim. He claims she was involved in an altercation with a 16-year-old girl wearing MAGA-themed sweatpants at Point Pleasant Beach.
“This whole situation is disproportionate and people like Kate don’t belong in any institution,” Geroni commented, despite not being present during the event, as he conveyed to a local news outlet.
“My wife has never gotten into any trouble before. This little situation, which was really nothing at first, spiraled out of control because of online conservatives and ended up with my wife in jail,” he added.
Geroni has a history of posting anti-Trump and anti-ICE content on TikTok, including one video where he wished harm upon the Trump family.
According to police reports, Tracy allegedly approached the girl, slapped her multiple times, and then left the scene.
However, Geroni disputes this, claiming it was his wife who was attacked and that she was not the one filming the altercation, arguing that the incident has been completely misrepresented.
“I saw a video that distorted the events. It made it seem like she was the one instigating the violence, when she wasn’t,” he stated.
Geroni expressed frustration by asserting that the fallout from the video has unjustly led to legal consequences for his wife.
Tracy turned herself in after charges were filed against her on July 9, and she was initially placed in immigration detention before being transferred to Delaney Hall.
