David James, who worked as a personal assistant for Sean “Diddy” Combs, decided to resign after a tense encounter involving Suge Knight, known for his ties to the rival label Death Row Records.
“It really shook me,” James shared with a reporter. “That was the first moment I realized my safety was at stake.”
Earlier that evening in November 2008, James had gone to Mel’s Drive-In Diner in Los Angeles to grab food while accompanied by Combs’ security guard, D-ROC.
James remembered D-Roc mentioning it was “Mother King Sousse Night.”
During this outing, D-Roc interacted with Suge Knight, whose real name is Marion Knight Jr.
“S-T, man, I’ve got the cash right here,” James recalled D-Roc saying in response.
Suddenly, four SUVs rolled into the diner’s parking lot, and James noted that someone handed a gun to Knight.
Afterward, D-Roc and James made their way back to Combs, riding in an escalade that was equipped with three firearms, all while a heavy silence hung in the air.
“Mr. Combs had three handguns on his lap,” James recounted.
However, when they eventually returned to the diner, Knight and his entourage had already left.
This unsettling experience led James to provide a six-month notice, allowing for training for his replacement. He eventually exited the company by 2009.
