Washington Political Scene Heats Up During State of the Union
House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed that he could have expelled more Democratic members from the House during the tumultuous State of the Union address on Tuesday night. He specifically pointed to what he described as President Trump’s “disgraceful” conduct throughout the speech.
During the address, a number of Democrats, including Representatives Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, were notably vocal, with Tlaib wearing an “F-ICE” pin. Observers noted Tlaib’s audible disrespect until she and Omar exited before Trump concluded.
“It was quite a disgraceful display,” Johnson remarked in an interview with Newsmax. “Multiple Congress members behaved in a way that could have led to their removal from the chamber.
However, he added, “the president managed the situation so well that I felt it might be more beneficial for the public to witness their shameful behavior.” He reiterated that they continued their interruptions.
In a previous incident, Representative Al Green was forcibly removed by the House Sergeant-at-Arms for displaying a sign reading “Black People Are Not Apes” while refusing to sit down during Trump’s address. This followed a series of now-deleted posts on Truth Social, wherein Trump shared a meme depicting Barack and Michelle Obama in an offensive manner. Trump later claimed he was unaware of the meme’s existence at the time of his posting.
Green had also faced ejection from the House last year while shouting at the president and waving a cane during a joint session.
“They clapped at the wrong moments and stayed silent when they should have supported,” Johnson summarized the Democrats’ behavior of the evening. “They applauded when they opposed tax cuts for working families.”
“That video will serve as a valuable resource for us moving forward. When the president posed an essential question, they chose not to respond. The government’s primary role is to ensure the safety of Americans, not illegal immigrants. Yet, they sat there in silence,” he emphasized.
Trump also took aim at the Democratic Party during his speech, saying, “You should be ashamed of yourselves for not standing up.” In a follow-up interview, Johnson underscored the significance of the upcoming midterm elections, cautioning, “If we lose the midterms—though I think that’s unlikely—the loss of our House majority would effectively end President Trump’s term.”
