‘I Need The Money’: Jim Carrey Explains His Return To Hollywood

Jim Carrey revealed he is making a Hollywood comeback out of financial necessity in a Tuesday interview with The Associated Press (AP).

The comedian and actor has returned to work after a lengthy hiatus to voice the villainous Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik and Gerald Robotnik in the upcoming “Sonic the Hedgehog 3.” Carrey candidly said he took the job for financial reasons, explaining at the film’s United Kingdom premiere that he ended his previously announced retirement to continue the franchise for a paycheck.

“I came back to this universe because, first of all, I get to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch,” Carrey told the outlet. “And, you know, it’s just — it’s just, I bought a lot of stuff and I need the money, frankly. Yeah.”

Carrey initially made his name in the industry with hits such as “The Cable Guy,” “Ace Ventura,” “Liar, Liar,” “Dumb and Dumber” and “The Mask,” though the comedian seemingly became more selective with his projects in recent years.

The actor announced his retirement from the entertainment industry during an interview with Access Hollywood in 2022.

“I have enough. I’ve done enough,” Carrey told the outlet at the time. “If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink, that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road. But I’m taking a break.”

Carrey joins a star-studded cast for his latest project. He voices characters alongside a cast including Keanu Reeves, Idris Elba, James Marsden, Ben Schwartz, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Shemar Moore, Adam Pally and Krysten Ritter, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
