Rapper Azealia Banks Withdraws from UK Festivals Amid Palestine Controversy
Azealia Banks, the rapper, has decided to pull out of two music festivals in the UK—Maiden Voyage Festival and Boomtown Festival. She made this announcement on Wednesday.
“That’s why I’m canceling Boomtown and Maiden’s Voyage,” she stated in a lengthy post on X.
She elaborated on her decision, claiming there was pressure to express support for Palestine. “They’re basically trying to force me. They hint that they need to say they support Palestine or that they’ll drop me from the gig,” she said. Banks expressed her frustration, suggesting that she feels misunderstood in this context.
Despite the circumstances, she mentioned she’d never wish ill on Palestine or endorse “silly slogans and performance nonsense.” She remarked, “You all want to create a bad stance, but honestly, it’s nothing compared to the long-standing issues that have existed for decades.” It seemed like she felt the complexities of the situation were being oversimplified.
She also pointed out that the dialogue around terms like “genocide” and “Zionist” has become rather commonplace, with little regard for the deeper implications. “I drive in Teslas and leave comments from my phone, yet there’s a lot more at stake than what people realize,” she reflected.
Wrapping up her thoughts, she expressed a desire to focus on her music for the remainder of the summer, stating, “I’m going to enjoy the rest of the summer and make music. It’s time for a new AB record.” She concluded with a strong sentiment, indicating that she didn’t feel the need to perform to satisfy protesters who seemed to misunderstand her stance.
