Former President Donald Trump declined to say Tuesday in Chicago whether he had spoken to Russian President Vladimir Putin since leaving office, but said it was the “wise thing” for him to do so.
Trump was being interviewed on stage at the Chicago Economic Club by Bloomberg News Editor-in-Chief John Micklethwait.
Micklethwaite, who remained hostile throughout the interview, asked Trump: suspicion In his new book, Bob Woodward claims that President Trump has met with President Putin at least seven times since leaving office.
“Can you say yes or no, have you spoken to Vladimir Putin since you left office?” Micklethwait asked.
“Well, I won't comment on that, but I will say that, if you do comment, it's the smart thing to do,” Trump responded. “If I'm friendly with people, if I have relationships with people, it's not bad for our country, it's good.”
President Trump pointed out that while he has built a friendly personal relationship with President Putin, he has taken a tough stance toward Russia, including imposing sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. He hinted that it would be wise to be friendly to nuclear-armed states.
Even though Putin did not invade any country during Trump's presidency, in contrast to the invasions during the George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden administrations, Democrats and the media have He continues to claim to be obedient to Putin.
