Former California Superior Court Judge LaDoris Cordell said Tuesday on MSNBC’s “All In” that he would sentence former President Donald Trump to prison for violating the gag order, but would not suspend it until after his New York trial. Stated.
Host Chris Hayes said, “I found it shocking when he said it seemed like the district attorney wanted a penalty. He was basically trying to put himself in jail for some dumb reason.” What did you think about that?
Cordell said, “I think it’s irrelevant. It doesn’t matter.”
“That’s interesting,” Hayes said.
“Some say he will go to prison and become a martyr,” Cordell said. “It doesn’t matter. Contempt has two purposes: one is to punish, and the other is to prevent future actions. Fines won’t deter, but jail will. The question is whether judges will do it.”
She added: “If I were a judge, I would impose a prison sentence. I’ll leave it at that in the sense that you’re not going to jail right now because that would delay the trial.” Yes, because that’s what Donald Trump and his people want. I’m going to stay in office, which means I’m going to sentence you whenever I see fit, and maybe at the end of the trial. We’re going to impose it while the jury deliberates. There’s nothing to prevent the judge from doing that.”
