IAEA leader speaks with Israeli president after airstrikes on Iran's nuclear site

IAEA Director Discusses Damage from Israeli Strikes on Iran’s Natanz Facility

An Israeli presidential spokesman shared that Rafael Mariano Grossi, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, contacted Israeli President Isaac Herzog following the airstrikes at the Natanz nuclear site in Iran. Reports from Israeli media indicate that Grossi informed Herzog about significant damage at the facility due to the strike.

“We are currently in communication with Iranian nuclear safety officials to evaluate the status of related nuclear facilities and to gauge the broader implications for nuclear safety and security,” Grossi stated. He also mentioned that Iranian authorities have confirmed the Natanz enrichment site has been impacted; however, radiation levels remain unchanged, and the Esfahan and Fordow sites are not currently affected.

Grossi expressed deep concern over the attack, highlighting that “I would prefer not to target nuclear facilities, regardless of the circumstances, as such actions can endanger lives and the environment.” He emphasized that strikes like this could have serious repercussions on nuclear safety, security measures, and regional and global peace.

Israel’s Offensive Against Iran’s Nuclear Program

The Israeli Air Force, according to a statement from the Israeli Defense Force, executed the strike on the Natanz uranium enrichment site, characterized as the “heart” of Iran’s nuclear efforts. “The attack was based on precise intelligence,” they stated.

The Natanz facility is Iran’s largest site for uranium enrichment, having operated for many years as part of their efforts to develop nuclear weapons. The strike targeted crucial infrastructure that supports the enrichment process, including a multi-story building dedicated to this purpose.

As Grossi called for all parties to exercise restraint and avoid further escalation, tensions in the region seem to heighten. The situation remains fluid, and the outcomes of these developments are still unfolding.
