Los Angeles County Declares Immigration Emergency Amid Federal Raids

In response to recent federal deportation raids, Los Angeles County officials have declared a state of emergency. This move was quickly met with reactions from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

This past Tuesday, four members of the Board of Supervisors supported the emergency declaration, while one opposed it. Some are questioning the decision, with one statement highlighting, “Perhaps the board should focus on helping law-abiding fire victims rather than funding illegal aliens who have broken the law.”

The resolution expressed that the recent actions had instilled a “climate of fear” among the community, affecting people’s willingness to leave their homes for work, public transport, or even county services.

Supervisor Lindsey Horvath emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating, “What’s happening in our community qualifies as an emergency, and Los Angeles County views it that way.” She mentioned that the declaration would harness all available county resources for immigrant communities affected by federal actions.

Janice Hahn, another supervisor, described the situation as a “man-made disaster,” likening it to an earthquake. She mentioned, “We want our residents to know that they have every resource available to them. This declaration isn’t just symbolic; it’s crucial for our forthcoming response.”

ICE spokesperson Emily Covington issued a statement criticizing the board’s declaration, asserting that it disrespected law enforcement. She remarked, “The real emergency is felt by Los Angeles residents who elected officials that disregard the law. Maybe the board should prioritize support for fire victims instead of aiding criminal aliens in sanctuary cities.”

The Board stated that this state of emergency will remain in place until they decide to revoke it. Tensions surrounding increased federal deportation efforts have also led to violent protests by anti-ICE groups, and at least one Democratic lawmaker has suggested that some of this violence could be exaggerated by the administration as a means to justify the invocation of the Insurrection Act.

As for President Trump, there’s been mention of his attempts to invoke said act, yet as of Wednesday afternoon, this had not occurred.
