Arrest of Former DACA Recipient in Chicago

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Chicago recently apprehended a Mexican national with a troubling criminal background, identified as Alan Eduardo Garcia, who had previously been a recipient of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Officials pointed out that his arrest was considered “high risk” due to his aggressive behavior and attempts to flee.

Garcia’s history includes multiple arrests and convictions for serious offenses such as felony strangulation, domestic assault, and unlawful use of a firearm, among others.

Interestingly, there was an incident during his arrest operation where a 31-year-old man was arrested as part of a similar operation. It appears he narrowly avoided injury by not jumping from a third-floor balcony while escaping ICE agents.

ICE officials noted that although Garcia was once a DACA recipient, his status was revoked in 2019 under the Trump administration.

Garcia was initially targeted during a traffic stop on October 8, during which he allegedly fled, ramming into a government vehicle, and drove at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour. On Wednesday, when ICE tried to arrest him yet again after he left his apartment, he reportedly rammed the agent’s car and then fled on foot, barricading himself inside.

Officers eventually entered his apartment and found him attempting to evade capture by jumping from a balcony. During the process of the arrest, Garcia allegedly punched an officer, and two were injured, requiring treatment at a local emergency facility.

Sam Olson, director of ICE’s Chicago field office, stated, “The safety and health of our employees is our top priority. This incident highlights the risks that police officers face every day in their duty to protect communities. We commend their professionalism and courage in responding to this dangerous situation.”

Garcia is currently in ICE custody as he awaits immigration proceedings.

In a separate incident also on Wednesday, a daycare worker was arrested while working off-duty in Chicago.
