ICE Raids Meat Production Plant, Over 70 Detained
US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials apprehended more than 60 undocumented individuals at a meat processing facility in Omaha, Nebraska, on Tuesday.
A press release from ICE revealed that during enforcement operations at Glen Valley Foods, “an illegal alien from Honduras wielded weapons and assaulted federal agents and officers.”
“More than 70 unauthorized immigrants were taken into custody” during these workplace enforcement activities, according to the release.
According to the statement, “yesterday, undocumented individuals from Honduras attacked federal officials who were performing their duties.”
Some of those detained reportedly had “active local warrants, previous DUI convictions, or had been deported before,” as indicated in the press release.
Over 70 illegal aliens were taken into custody during the operation. Some individuals faced active local warrants, had prior DUI convictions, and had been previously deported. Many could face further federal charges including fraud, assaulting federal officers, resisting arrest, illegal reentry, and misuse of Social Security numbers.
Breitbart News highlighted in December 2024 that a poultry industry news outlet suggested that the repatriation of undocumented workers in the US could prompt businesses reliant on immigrant labor to increase wages in order to attract American workers.
The poultry sector significantly relies on migrant labor. Many of these workers are undocumented, and their contributions are crucial in processing plants and farms.
Gary Rohwer, owner of Glen Valley Foods, expressed his frustration, asserting that the company utilized e-Verify and followed all necessary protocols. He mentioned that the company is operating at about 30% capacity.
“We were very upset. We were told to verify everything with e-Verify, and we’ve been doing that for years,” Rohwer stated when asked about his feelings toward the raid.
