HOUSTON, Texas – Incident Involving ICE Officer and Mexican National
In a recent incident, a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer shot and killed a Mexican national in Houston. This event unfolded during a focused crackdown, with reports indicating that the individual attempted to run over the officer with his vehicle after fleeing the scene.
The deceased has been identified as Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, who was in the U.S. without legal status. The incident took place on the east side of the city.
According to a statement from ICE, the shooting occurred as part of a “targeted immigration enforcement operation aimed at apprehending illegal aliens.” Officials described the confrontation, stating that Araujo allegedly rammed an ICE vehicle and ignored several commands from officers. They mentioned that he “weaponized” his truck in an attempt to strike one of the officers, which led to the officers firing their weapons in defense.
After the shooting, Araujo was treated on-site before being taken to Ben Taub Hospital, where he later succumbed to injuries from a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
Officials noted that the driver of the vehicle sustained bruises and called for emergency help. The Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General is overseeing the investigation into the officer-involved shooting, while the FBI is looking into potential assaults against federal law enforcement personnel.
ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) regularly conduct these enforcement actions in the Houston region. In May alone, ICE’s Houston ERO unit apprehended 735 individuals, including many with violent crime convictions. Gabriel Martinez, acting director of the Houston ERO, remarked that these figures reflect ongoing operations, emphasizing that those apprehended are often serious offenders.
Martinez asserted that the public should understand that many individuals targeted are not simply those seeking economic opportunities, but rather repeat offenders of law. He expressed concern that failure to apprehend these individuals could lead to more crimes.
No information has emerged yet regarding Araujo’s prior criminal record. Local political representatives have expressed urgency for accountability. Houston Rep. Sylvia Garcia called for thorough oversight of the incident, highlighting the need for transparency and the release of all relevant evidence.
State Rep. Cristina Morales echoed this sentiment, framing the shooting as part of broader issues within immigration enforcement. She advocated for meaningful reform and underscored that operations should not jeopardize community safety.
As investigations by the FBI into this incident continue, the focus remains on understanding the circumstances surrounding the officer-involved shooting.
