Federal Raid in New York’s Chinatown

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have confirmed that nine West African immigrants were arrested for residing in the United States illegally, specifically in the Chinatown area of New York City.

In the same incident, four individuals protesting against these arrests were detained. The charges involved obstructing ICE officers and throwing items at them.

Reports indicate that the immigrants, hailing from Senegal, Mali, and Guinea, were believed to be selling counterfeit goods in the vicinity. ICE noted that the detained protesters had prior criminal records.

DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin described the operation as a “targeted intelligence-driven enforcement operation” aimed at tackling criminal activities linked to alleged counterfeit sales on Canal Street.

McLaughlin stated, “During this operation, a mob began yelling obscenities and became violent, hindering law enforcement efforts by blocking vehicles and even assaulting officers.” One individual was arrested for allegedly assaulting a federal officer.

According to Murad Awaudeh, vice president for human rights advocacy at the New York Immigration Coalition, between 15 and 40 street vendors were apprehended, and at least two locals were detained for interfering with the protests and arrests.

In response to the incident, city authorities made efforts to distance themselves from the federal actions.

City Hall spokesperson Kayla Mamelak Artus reiterated that New York City has consistently refrained from collaborating with federal agencies on civil deportation issues, aligning with local laws. She stated, “Mayor Adams has been clear that undocumented New Yorkers seeking the American Dream should not be targeted by law enforcement; instead, focus should be on violent criminals.”

Meanwhile, Zoran Mandani, a candidate for mayor from the Socialist Party, characterized the actions of federal agents as “aggressive and reckless,” further expressing concern over the approach taken by the Trump administration, which he claims fosters fear rather than security.
