USCIS Operation Highlights Immigration Fraud
On Tuesday, Director Joseph Edlow from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services shared the outcomes of Operation Twin Shield. This operation, which focused on immigration and citizenship enforcement in Minneapolis and St. Paul, uncovered that nearly half of the cases examined involved immigration fraud.
The fraudulent activities included marriage fraud, abuse of H-1B visas, forged documents, and instances where individuals claimed to be employed by companies that didn’t exist. The operation, conducted between September 19 and 28, involved over 1,000 site visits across the area. According to Edlow, the findings exposed systematic problems within various immigration programs.
“What we find should shock the entire nation,” he stated.
An especially concerning example highlighted by Edlow was related to the Ukraine unity program, which the Biden administration initiated to welcome 100,000 Ukrainian citizens. This program allowed U.S.-based individuals and organizations to sponsor Ukrainian refugees for entry into the U.S. Edlow mentioned that ICE discovered concerning patterns within this program, which, intended to help those in need, raised serious questions.
There was one case where a single company sponsored over 100 people, revealing that hundreds of sponsors were involved. Under the guidelines established by the Biden administration, those admitted under this program could stay in the U.S. for up to two years and had the option to apply for an extension. They were also allowed to work while in the country.
In addressing the fraud issue and the broader implications revealed by Operation Twin Shield, Edlow underscored the seriousness of the situation. “What we find should shock the whole of America,” he reiterated, arguing that systemic issues and abuses like these undermine the integrity of the immigration system as a whole.
Minneapolis has been a focal point in immigration discussions in recent years, especially with the increasing influx of immigrants, particularly from Somalia, during President Joe Biden’s term and with Democratic Governor Tim Walz. Representative Ilhan Omar (D), who represents much of Minneapolis, has faced scrutiny in recent months for potential immigration fraud-related allegations.
