Protests in Minneapolis Result in Arrests
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) released images of four individuals taken into custody during protests at the Bishop Henry Whipple Federal Building in Minneapolis. The arrests occurred on Thursday after the men ignored multiple instructions to disperse.
In a statement posted on X, ICE indicated that law enforcement faced aggression from the protesters, who allegedly hurled objects and created hazardous conditions. Following repeated warnings, the four were charged with federal offenses.
On the same night, twelve other individuals were arrested on suspicion of assaulting law enforcement, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). They emphasized that attacking law enforcement or vandalizing federal property constitutes a felony.
It’s uncertain if the four individuals arrested by ICE were part of this larger group detained overnight. Protests continued into Friday, as crowds gathered again outside the federal building.
The Whipple Federal Building houses several federal agencies, including ICE and DHS. Tensions have heightened recently due to violent incidents involving ICE in Minneapolis. One particularly notable event involved the shooting of Renee Nicole Good, a U.S. citizen, on January 7. Opinions on this incident are sharply divided, with locals condemning it as an unjustified homicide, while some officials from the Trump administration defended the action as necessary.
Just earlier this week, an ICE officer suffered significant injuries during an ambush allegedly set up by three undocumented immigrants. This escalation of confrontation has seen various incidents of violence and serious altercations, leading to multiple arrests.
DHS has not yet responded to requests for further comments on these developments.
