Chaos Erupts During Federal Raid in Chinatown

A federal operation in New York City’s Chinatown, aimed at addressing counterfeit goods, turned chaotic on Friday when clashes broke out between protesters and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. City officials clarified they had no role in the action.

According to Tricia McLaughlin, Assistant Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, ICE and its federal partners executed a “targeted intelligence-driven enforcement operation” centered on illegal sales of purportedly counterfeit items on Canal Street. She stated, “During this law enforcement operation, a mob yelling obscenities became violent and disrupted law enforcement operations, including blocking vehicles and assaulting law enforcement. One rioter has already been arrested on suspicion of assaulting a federal officer.”

Murad Awaudeh, a vice president with the New York Immigration Coalition, mentioned at a press conference that 15 to 40 vendors were taken into custody, along with at least two local residents who disrupted the protests.

City officials swiftly distanced themselves from the incident. Mayor Eric Adams’ press secretary, Kayla Mamelak Altus, emphasized that New York City “has never cooperated with federal law enforcement on civil deportation matters in accordance with local law” and had “no involvement in this matter.” She added, “Mayor Adams has made it clear that undocumented New Yorkers seeking to pursue the American Dream should not be the target of law enforcement, and that resources should instead be focused on violent criminals.”

While local authorities are monitoring the scene near Canal Street and 26 Federal Plaza, they reassured the public that “the matter is under control.” However, they indicated that the New York City Police Department (NYPD) would step in if the situation became violent or if someone obstructed law enforcement.

Jumaane Williams, a New York City activist, expressed concern over the federal presence: “I saw what looked like tanks in the street. We saw people with weapons and vendor tactical gear, and it was planned. Many were actually forewarned that this was going to happen. In this case, they were targeting black vendors on Canal Street. None of this is about public safety. It’s about fear and chaos.” He did convey some hope, believing that a more caring mayor might emerge soon.

Socialist Party mayoral hopeful Zoran Mamdani criticized the situation on X, calling it “aggressive and reckless.” He labeled the federal agents’ actions as creating fear rather than ensuring security, indicating a need for change.

New York City Comptroller Brad Lander reiterated, “To be clear, street vendors are not a national security threat. There is no excuse for sending military vehicles or national law enforcement response against street vendors, whether they come from social media or not.”

The Department of Homeland Security mentioned that more details regarding the detained individuals would be made available. ICE has not yet provided comments regarding the incident.
