ICE Raids Intensify Virginia Governor’s Election

Political Tensions Around ICE Arrests in Virginia

Republican gubernatorial candidate Wyn Earl Thurs isn’t letting Democrat Abigail Spanberger off the hook for her remarks regarding last month’s attack in Virginia.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reports that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents recently apprehended two undocumented individuals with considerable criminal backgrounds.

Spanberger, a former intelligence officer and Democrat, criticized the protocols used by ICE agents during the arrest. She expressed her concerns about the lack of identification and the disguises worn by some individuals involved. “What stood out to us, especially here in Charlottesville, is when people don’t present IDs and sometimes they’re just wearing casual clothing with masks,” she remarked earlier this month.

She went on to reflect on her past as a federal agent, stating, “I handled many drug and money laundering cases, executing numerous warrants at all hours. Every time, it’s crucial to identify yourself clearly to the community. It’s chaotic, with officers often drawn up at houses, shouting ‘police’ while displaying their badges, credentials, and warrants.”

This week, Earl’s spokesman, Payton Vogel, turned Spanberger’s comments into a political critique, telling a news outlet, “Spanberger’s frustration over criminal illegal immigrants being taken out of our city reveals a lot about her as a potential governor.”

Among those arrested was Theodoro Dominguez Rodriguez, a Honduran national characterized by the DHS as “a violent, illegal alien” with numerous assault and battery arrests and a protective order against him. Another individual, Mexican national Pablo Aparicio Marcelino, was arrested for driving without a license and in connection with an accident.

The lieutenant governor’s spokesman called out the media for their reaction, criticizing them for not addressing the masks worn by the agents. “It’s curious how the media, quick to advocate for mask-wearing to protect law enforcement, remain silent about sympathizers for terrorist organizations on university campuses,” he pointed out.

The assistant DHS secretary dismissed Spanberger’s claims about ICE agents not properly identifying themselves, suggesting it’s common sense to apprehend a suspect at the scene.

Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin is supporting Earl Thurs in the upcoming November election, which will select the next state leader. This isn’t the first instance of the lieutenant governor’s campaign using illegal immigration as a talking point. In her initial campaign ad, Earl criticized Spanberger for her stance against a border wall.

At that time, a spokesperson for Spanberger described the ad as a distraction, asserting that the former lawmaker had signed a bipartisan bill intended to combat fentanyl trafficking and secure borders.
