Portland ICE Facility Under Continuous Attack
Federal immigration authorities have reported that the ICE facility in Portland, Oregon, has been under siege every night, with little support from the local police, attributed to directives from city leaders.
In a recent interview, Camila Wamsley, director of the Portland ICE Office, shared that the facility has endured violence for more than 100 nights straight. She noted that the Portland Police’s absence is largely due to the mayor and city council’s policies.
“I just can’t wrap my head around the stance taken by the city. It’s really confusing,” Wamsley expressed. “Watching people get attacked on the streets is frustrating. Unless there’s a strong basis in federal law, the ability to act is pretty limited.”
Wamsley described how protests often escalate from mere chants to more aggressive actions, like throwing rocks, shaking barricades, and using lasers to distract officers.
Wamsley also mentioned that protesters have followed ICE staff home and doxxed several employees. “At night, there’s this group dressed in all black. Their intent seems clear; they cause trouble—blocking cars, throwing paint, and even trying to intimidate our people as they leave,” she explained.
Wamsley is concerned that the situation could escalate even further if the crowds grow larger.
“We’ve witnessed it before—crowds can swell from 50 to 1,000 in a matter of minutes,” she noted. “And with only a handful of officers present, it’s tough to secure the building.”
The Portland Police Department’s slow response has been an ongoing issue, with many stating that they either arrive late or not at all. Wamsley pointed out how protocols seem to change based on location, saying, “They wouldn’t take such a hands-off approach six blocks away, but that’s how it is with us, due to directives from the mayor and council.”
Despite the unrest, Wamsley affirmed the commitment of ICE staff to their mission. “We’re here to serve the American people and enforce the immigration laws that have been in place for decades. Our daily operations remain unchanged.”
In the backdrop of these protests, President Trump has indicated plans to send 200 National Guard troops to Portland to assist immigration enforcement, positioning them near areas of protest.
Concerns about safety have intensified following a recent violent incident at a Dallas ICE facility, where two detainees lost their lives and another was hospitalized. Investigators found shell casings at the scene that bore messages against ICE.
